Stevens Team Carbon
Frameset Features | Geometry | Build and Pricing
The Stevens Team Carbon is just one of those bikes that oozes speed and sex appeal. It looks fast sitting still, begs to be ridden hard and is one of the truest expressions of a cyclocross race bike we know of. And with more podium placings than we can count, including at the World Championships, it has the racing pedigree to back up that claim. If it's tried-and-true race-worthiness you want, you'll not do better than the Team Carbon.
If low weight is also a priority for you, the Team Carbon will oblige. At around 1000 grams for a mid-sized frame, this bike is decidedly on the light side of the spectrum. The Team Carbon with our SRAM Red Team Issue build weighs in around 16.5 pounds. So, like we said: light. If stiffness is your thing, no problem. High modulus carbon fiber material is formed into the kind of wide-profile tubes and junctions that yield minimal frame deflection under power, while a softer medium modulus material is used for the outer carbon layer, which increases the durability and survivability of this race machine in the inevitable tumbles and scrapes incurred during cross racing.
One of the things we love best about the Team Carbon is how unabashedly aggressive Stevens has been with the geometry of this bike. This is a road racer's cross bike: a relatively long top tube meets a short head tube, and makes the Team Carbon one of the only cross bikes we've ever encountered that we can set up to mimic the fit of our road bikes with no funny fitting gimmicks. This is great for riders who enter cross season after roughly 8 or 9 months spent atop their road machines and want minimal adaptation issues. This road-bike-esque front-end geometry, combined with Stevens' philosophy of low bottom brackets, has real-world benefits on the cross course. With a lower center of gravity, cornering at any speed is more stable. The bike also stays more rooted to the ground in technical turns and off-camber sections. The best way to describe this bike is that it feels more connected to the earth; it's a lot less tippy in corners than your average cross bike.
We'll freely admit it: The Team Carbon isn't for everyone. The aggressive geometry means that some just won't be able to ride this bike comfortably and the low bottom bracket means that those with a predilection for bunny-hopping barriers may want to look elsewhere. But if raw speed and phenomenal handling are you want, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better value proposition than the Team Carbon.
