FMB Super Mud Tubular Tires
Recently we introduced FMB tires as one of our new product lines here at Embrocation. It was a bit of a dream-come-true for us since we've long lusted after these handmade tires and were eager to try them out. We started with the SSC tread, which in our experience is one of the most versatile tread patterns available; it excels on dry grass, mud, pavement, and loose dirt. The SSC is a universally fast tread mounted on FMB's legendary hand-made casing and we call it the tire we would use if we had to commit to one tread for a whole season of racing. This statement is true, but also ridiculous. One of the best things about cyclocross is the narrow focus on equipment tailored specifically to a given race. Having a whole quiver of wheels and tires and then choosing the appropriate set for each race is part of the fun.
Enter the Super Mud from FMB. Unlike the SSC, this tire is a true specialist: as the name conveys, this is tire designed specifically for mud - deep mud, sticky mud, wet mud. The tread is composed of deep Z-shaped knobs that sink into the mud, grab onto it tenaciously for excellent grip, and then immediately sheds this mud as the tire rotates through. The compound is extremely soft and tacky, which not only provides grip on all surfaces but it also keeps the tire grippy when temperatures dip to near-freezing later in the season. With this unique tread and the same supple, flexible, beautiful cotton casing used on all FMB tubulars, the Super Mud handles any muddy situation with aplomb and has become one of the most sought-after tires in the world. Indeed, when we announced we were going to be carrying FMB tires, we instantly received many emails and calls asking us if we'd be bringing in the Super Mud. Well, we have them now, albeit in VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES. If you want these, get on it now because they'll soon be gone.
It uses a latex inner tube inside a cotton casing with natural rubber tread and cotton backing tape. Like all FMB tires, the Super Mud comes pre-treated with Aqua Seal sidewall treatment to keep water out of the casing. The standard cotton version is stamped with "EMBRO" and the Moka Pot, the PRO version is not.

Tubular Tire Disclaimer: Tubular tires rock, but they can be dangerous unless installed properly, which can be a tricky business. Properly mounting tubular tires requires both specific knowledge and extensive practice. If you lack either of these, please find someone who has both in abundance. Someone like a professional bicycle mechanic, who would love to glue up your sweet new cyclocross tubulars instead of performing yet another tune-up on a hybrid.
