We remember seeing Julien Absalon’s world champ-winning mountain bike on display at Interbike. It was a stripped-down, 29” wheeled hardtail with carbon rims, tubular tires and road pedals. The fork had its suspension guts ripped out and had the sliders welded in place to make light, but still sponsorship-compliant rigid
fork. It was raw and fast – purposely made for speed and it got our blood pumping just to look at it.

Our mountain bike, the Chunder as it’s called, is built as an off-road version of our Corsa, with rigidity and front end stiffness as the main priorities. There’s really nothing fancy here – just a stripped down race machine, built using the same 7000 series Dedacciai alloy tubing as our Corsa. We’ve optimized the geometry for cross country race purposes, so the handling is predictable but quick and the wheelbase is kept as tight as possible while still allowing for wide diameter tires and mud clearance.

The Chunder is built with race purposes in mind, so it’s light and with an appropriately light parts kit will build up to a race-appropriate weight. Apart from its lightness and its incredibly taught, stiff ride quality the Chunder’s tubeset also makes it survivable in conditions that would destroy other race bikes. It’s an all-too common sight at XC races: some poor lady or fellow comes walking out of the woods, head sagging in dejected fashion, carrying his or her broken top-shelf carbon race bike. It’s just something that happens and as light and stiff as carbon can be it is more susceptible to impact damage. The Chunder, on the other hand, can take all level of impacts from rocks and stones (and dare we say, crashes) and keeps on rolling for the long haul.

The Chunder uses the same Press Fit BB30 system as the Corsa, so it will accept and BB30 MTB crankset or a 24mm spindle crankset from Shimano with the appropriate adapters. We also use the 44mm head tube on the Chunder, which allows use of just about any fork, including those with tapered steerers. We offer two forks options with the Chunder: The Carbon 29er rigid fork from Whisky Components and the Fox 32 Float suspension fork. Both forks match the intended handling characteristics of the frame and are fully race-worthy. We recommend choosing a fork based on your intended use and the types of courses you’ll be riding.

While the tubeset is the same as the Corsa, we’ve made one key difference to the specifications on the Chunder: We have omitted the use of the integrated seatmast in favor of using a long, extended seat tube with a standard 27.2 post and clamp system. We’ve done this to accomodate the geometry requirements of the XC race platform – a slacker seat tube angle necessitates a zero-offset post for most riders, as opposed to the significant setback of the mast topper. Additionally, the lengthened seat tube provides the strength and stiffness of the seat mast, but with quick adjustability and some ease of packaging and shipping.

We offer the Chunder as a frameset in either 29” or 650b wheel versions. Please note, the geometry chart included below represents the 29” wheel version – the 650b version will differ slightly in some dimensions to adjust for the slightly smaller wheel size. We offer 5 stock sizes but will be happy to consult on any custom geometry needs you may have. We offer the Chunder as a frameset with either fork version or with a variety of pre-selected kit options from SRAM and Shimano. We are happy to spec and quote a custom build kit for you if you so choose.
