I recently found myself chatting with a friend on the phone. This friend happens to own a bicycle company (that shall remain anonymous) that makes some very nice carbon fiber race bicycles. They outfit a bunch of teams and have a solid race pedigree here in the US and elsewhere. He noted with affectionate tone that Embrocation was now involved with Pegoretti and he had noted our stock of Marcelo and Responsorium. What he said next surprised me a bit: "Have you ridden an Emma? I have one. It's awesome - truly awesome. Unbelievably responsive but also so, so smooth. Not sure how it works like that, but it's an amazing machine."

In the Pegoretti lineup, Big Leg Emma stands as a purist's machine. It's less the all-rounder than the Marcelo or the Responsorium. What it IS, is the stiffest, most diabolically race-oriented bicycle that Dario knows how to build and is a machine that is intended for regular, consistent and hard abuse from its rider. If you're a big, powerful crit specialist, a sprinter, or just the sort who likes your bikes to be uncompromising race machines, you'd be doing yourself a service by adding the Emma to your bike list.

The design elements of the Big Leg Emma are based on two simple premises: One, that wider diameter pipes are stiffer and less prone to bending under load. Two, that the down tube and the chainstays have the most direct bearing on the bottom bracket deflection of a bicycle frame. So, to complete this little syllogism: making a bicycle with big, stiff downtube and chainstays will reduce bottom bracket deflection under load, i.e. increase drivetrain stiffness. It's a simple proposition that most bicycle designers and makers know to be true. What makes Dario's version of the ultimate go-fast bike so interesting are the lengths to which he goes to achieve the goals and the elegance with which the final vision is rendered.

To achieve the goal of the stiffest bike possible, Dario did two main things: he used ridiculously large chainstays--over 20mm in diameter versus the Marcelo's already bloated 18mm stays--and he also employs unique stiffener plates brazed into the downtube. These are essentially thick steel shanks placed down either side of the huge down tube to help resist the twisting forces that tube experiences during hard pedaling efforts. It's a detail that is singular in metal bicycle frame fabrication and that seems to have some real-world results.

The Big Leg Emma is available as a frameset with Enve Composites 2.0 carbon fork unless otherwise noted. We have no idea how much the frame weighs and if you're wondering, you're also missing the point of the bike entirely. It uses a 29.4mm seatpost, 31.8mm clamp-on front derailleur and an Italian threaded bottom bracket.

The Marcelo is the flagship steel bike from one of the (most likely THE) most revered frame builders of his generation. This bike is Dario's expression of what he thinks a steel race bicycle should be. Really, we shouldn't have to say much more than this for you to be sold on the fact that there's no finer rendering of the steel bicycle than the Marcelo, but we will.

At first glance the Marcelo, as with other Pegoretti frame models, seems a relatively simple affair. Round tubes mated to round tubes and stays with simple, gorgeous, functional welds. Delve slightly below the surface, however, and you quickly note the evidence of intense attention to detail for which Dario Pegoretti is known and admired. Not one aspect of the frame design and construction has been glanced over - rather, each element of every frame has been painstakingly thought through. It starts with the tubes, which are made by legendary Italian manufacturer Columbus. Dario has been known to drive the boys at Columbus a little bit crazy by requesting small, seemingly insignificant changes to the tubing. A slightly wider diameter here, a .2mm change in tube wall thickness there; things that improve the ride or the production process and which only a master with decades of design and fabrication experience could truly understand.

The Marcelo is made from Dario's own version of the Columbus Spirit tubeset, which is the top-shelf steel alloy currently available for bicycle construction. This oversized version of Spirit makes the race-inspired ride of the Marcelo possible. It's stiff and responsive with the snappy, lively feel that only steel can deliver. It results in what, for most riders and racers, is the holy grail of ride quality: a smooth and damped ride combined with taught, stiff responsiveness under power. The ride is reminiscent of the best stage race bikes - it glides along easily and smoothly for mile after mile and then, when called on to go hard, it answers that call with ample drivetrain rigidity and excellent high speed handling characteristics.

And then there are the small details: The characteristic Pegoretti hooded dropouts are intricately machined stainless steel that are both stunning to behold and capable of absorbing hard wheel-in, wheel-out abuse. The chainstays are thicker than average and taper gracefully toward the bottom bracket to allow for stiffness and adequate tire clearance. And of course there's the paint - that famous Pegoretti paint. Some love it, some hate it, but nobody can deny how original and identifiable the paint schemes on Dario's frames are.

We offer the Marcelo as a frameset and we would be happy to consult with you about a complete bike or a parts package to compliment your Pegoretti frameset. The Marcelo comes with Pegoretti's Falz full carbon fork. This fork was the result of an exhaustive search by Dario to find the right fork - so exhaustive in fact, that he never found a fork on the market to meet his specifications, so he made his own. The Marcelo uses a standard 1 1/8" headset and a 29.4 seatpost. The bottom bracket is Italian threaded. We have several sizes and paint schemes in stock and ready to ship.

Like Richard Sachs is to lugged steel and Nick Crumpton and Craig Calfee are to carbon fiber, Dario Pegoretti is the long-held master of the welded metal bicycle frame. He is a devotee of a particular set of skills applied to a given set of materials and has primarily committed himself to the production of his welded chromoly steel bikes, known as the Marcelo. As with any master craftsman, he's no stranger to other production processes, such as filet brazing, or other materials, such as aluminum. He has historically been unafraid to bring his skills to bear on new materials. The Responsorium is Dario's rendering of a bicycle from stainless steel alloy, and it possesses a character different from his other offerings, but still distinctly Dario in ride and appearance.

In the world of metal alloys for bicycle production, no single material has seen as many recent advances as stainless steel. Normally used for things like medical devices, cutlery, art deco buildings and DeLoreans, stainless never gained a whole lot of traction in the bicycle building world. It's harder and less malleable than carbon steels and thus more difficult to work with, both in the formation of tubing and during the actual frame-building process. That, combined with the fact that it offers few real-world performance benefits versus its more rust-prone carbon steel brethren, means there was rightfully little place for stainless amongst frame builders. That changed recently with the introduction of several alloys from the industry's most revered tube makers. Reynolds debuted their 953 alloy a few years ago, followed shortly thereafter by Columbus with their XCr tubing. Dario Pegoretti is the biggest single consumer of Columbus tubing and it's a good bet he played a decisive part in the design of XCr.

So is the Responsorium just a stainless rendition of the Marcelo? Well, yes and no. The bikes are different and will have different, albeit similar characters. Marcelo is designed to be the perfect all-rounder. If you're lucky enough to have a stable of amazing bikes, Marcelo is the bike you grab by default when you can't decide - because it does everything well, and predictably. The front triangle of the Responsorium has tubes that are identical in diameter to the Marcelo, and so retains that bike's front end stiffness and adroit handling. The stays on the Responsorium are toned down: chainstays are a normal-ish 16mm instead of Marcelo's bulbous 18mm. It sounds like a small difference, but that 2mm reduction in diameter takes a little bite out of the rear end of the bike. To be clear, it's not a difference so pronounced that you'll notice it straight away, but it will become apparent on rough sections and over many miles in the saddle.

Using the Marcelo as the baseline for Pegoretti steel bikes, Responsorium is a good bit lighter and a little less stiff. It also has the durability and longevity advantages of a material that is all but impervious to the elements. In our minds, it's the Pegoretti for riding a LOT of miles and where that fiendish stiffness in response to acceleration is less important than stamping out the distance. Responsorium is a machine inclined toward finesse but ready for the long haul.

The Responsorium uses a 30.0mm seatpost and a 31.8mm clamp-on front derailleur. As with all Pegoretti models the Responsorium uses an Italian threaded bottom bracket.
